Casino Miracles

I won big at the casino this holiday season, in ways I could never have dreamed of…

This Christmas brought my entire family together from all over the globe.  It was a wonderful present for all of us.  My brother and I were hanging out one day and as I usually find in the city,  we couldn’t figure out what to do,  (You’re never bored in the wilderness, it’s lovely)  so naturally we started with “going out for lunch”- the typical city thing to do.  (Food does not consume your thoughts or fill a need in the wilderness, it’s lovely)  After Thai food we decided to go to the casino!

It’s pretty much unheard of to throw money away in the wilderness, though I do stash a bit of cash in a cedar stump for emergencies, gambling just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but because I wanted to spend as much time as I could with my big brother, I was all in.

We hit the slots…lights flashing and picture reels spinning.  I watched Tim for a few minutes to figure out what the heck was going on and what the point of it all was and pretty soon realized I didn’t even have to know.  All you need is blind faith in the machines ability to tell you if you’ve won.  What a deal!

I sat down in the next chair and watched the machine suck in my $20. I pressed the “spin” button and heard a weak little Ding.  I won!

My 5 Cent win was so ridiculously funny I had to take a picture.  I cashed out immediately and we were off to find another “winning” machine.  Naturally I picked the biggest two machines and we sat down side-by-side to the Ocean Wildlife slots.  After a few disappointing losses, my machine starts going berserk, new scenes are popping up, the massive screen above us starts flashing, the speaker behind my head starts shouting, Ding Ding Ding Ding!!!  I’m expecting balloons and streamers to start falling from the ceiling.  I”m like, “Tim, what the heck is happening?  What to I do?”  He leans over and laughs, “I can’t believe it, you’ve just won all the bonus rounds.”  “What does that mean, what do I push now?”  We’re laughing, I’m cheering, wheels are spinning, screens are flashing fish I can identify by name…and after all of the excitement the machine spits out my winnings…..$16.47.  Yah, that’s it.  Turns out I had only been making 30 cent bets.  I would have had a plane ticket to Hawaii and a free scuba dive to see the fish on the screen live if I had bet $20.

But the real miracle came a couple of hours later, not only was I still betting with the same $20, my luck continued, but I heard my name being called to the front desk, even over the extreme noise of the casino.  I stood in line wondering if I had won something else.  The lady at the desk asked, “Have you lost anything?”  I padded all my pockets and felt the familiar slump of my shoulders when I realized I had lost my wallet.  She motioned me over to another desk where a man was stuffing all my cash and credit cards back in after finding my driver’s license to make sure I was indeed Nikki van Schyndel.

I asked the guy,  “Has this ever happened before? A returned wallet in a casino? I mean this has got to be a miracle straight from God, there’s not even a quarter stolen.” He just looked at me in disbelief and said, “Yup, it’s a miracle.”
